St. Petersburg’s century-old “Cake House” is back on the market.
The home was built in 1923 by prominent local builder P.M. Murphy and designed by acclaimed architect Herman Everett Wendell, who also designed Dunedin’s historic Fenway Hotel. The estate at 1311 Beach Drive NE has entered the market at $2.15 million and is represented by Nick Janovsky of Premier Sotheby's International Realty's St. Petersburg office.
The property was taken off the market in August after being listed for $2.25 million in February, according to Realtor.com.
The five-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom home sits on a corner lot in St. Pete’s Historic Old Northeast neighborhood. The 3,477-square-foot home has been preserved to celebrate its Havana-inspired design roots. The layered roofline, textured soft-green stucco façade and intricate millwork inspired its nickname “The Cake House.”
"The story, architecture and character of this home are simply extraordinary,” Janovsky said in a statement. “The Cake House is more than a residence, it's a living piece of St. Petersburg's evolving identity where past and present meet."
The interior’s original hardwood floors and millwork have been restored. A sunroom opens into flexible living and dining areas pre-wired for audio and visual entertainment.
The chef’s kitchen includes a movable island, a full butler pantry with bar functionality and updated appliances. The primary suite has an updated California closet system, and the bathroom has dual vanities, brass fixtures and a walk-in, Calacatta marble shower.
Outside, a Mediterranean-style courtyard is framed by restored original columns, and herringbone brick pavers lead to a wood-fire pizza oven and outdoor kitchen.
The historic home, on its 7,920-square-foot lot, comes with a detached two-car garage and a one-bedroom, one-bathroom guest apartment.
The home last sold in 2011 for $385,000, or about $111 per square foot. The listing price is $618 per square foot.
