Politics, sunshine and affordability: The factors fueling Florida's housing market
ORLANDO, Fla. — Politics aren’t just playing out at the ballot box — they’re also shaping where people choose to live. A survey from Realtor.com shows more Americans are thinking about politics when picking a place to call home.
What You Need To Know
- Central Florida realtors say affordability and lower taxes are attracting buyers from states like California and New York
- Beyond politics, people are moving for lifestyle reasons — including community, jobs and Florida’s sunshine
- Realtors note a seasonal surge in “snowbirds” and say the condo market is starting to rebound
During this time of year, many realtors say they’re busy.
With the recent election on top of that, Jonathan Cole, a realtor in Central Florida, says it’s adding a new layer of activity and conversation among buyers.
According to Realtor.com, about one in four Americans say local or national politics play a role in where they decide to live.
“Election results really affect real estate because people get hit in their pocketbooks — whether taxes go up or taxes go down, and the affordability of living in a house,” Cole said. “One of the benefits that we have here in Central Florida compared to areas like California, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts — we have a lot more affordable homes than they would find there. So that is one of the draws that is bringing people here from those areas.”
But it’s not all about politics. Realtors say Florida has always been attractive to buyers.
“We have great coastal communities, that small-town feel but yet close enough to Orlando for the theme parks and sporting events,” said Jennifer Matacale, who is a Global Real Estate Advisor
Matacale and her husband Todd have been in real estate for over 20 years. They say they’ve seen many people moving for community, the job market, and of course, the sunshine.
Realtor.com found that good schools and affordability remain the top reasons people choose to relocate.
“Every October — we have seen this consistently for years — we have several snowbirds that are coming down. The condo market is starting to rebound,” said Metacale.
As for what’s next, experts say many factors, including affordability and the political climate, will continue to shape how confident buyers feel about their next move.
